Date: November, 2008
Authors: van Wesel, M. & Prop, A
2. Objectives of the research
This study collects the perceptions of medical students on the support for self-reflection of portfolio and explores the influence of learning outcomes of the two different portfolio media.
3. Methods
This study applies large scale (n=347) controlled trial following the steps like providing instructions, separating experiment groups and contracting the results. Meanwhile, questionnaire is used in this research.
4. Results
There are no significant difference between the perceptions of students on the support of self reflection via paper portfolio or electronic portfolio and more time is spent when compiling the electronic portfolio. In this specific context, the influence of e-portfolio is positive. But some elements, like technical problems and cultural background, would change the results.
5. Evaluation
In respects of the perceptions collected from students, questionnaire is far from enough to gather information for analyzing the questions and leading to the results. Other methods, like interview or case study might be required for further information. As the authors mentioned, perceptions could be collected both before and after the introduction of e-portfolio tools.
In this study, authors do not clearly introduce the process of the research and describe the process with explicit language in the section of methods. Additionally, suggestions and limitation of this study is not concrete for future researchers to conduct and improve the experiment.
